CSSANZ is proud to have appointed our first female President, Dr Elizabeth Murphy. Liz won't openly triumph her inaugural female leadership position, but we in the CSSANZ office are proud to do so.
Dr Elizabeth Murphy was elected to the CSSANZ Council in 2017, and has held executive positions since 2019 as Honorary Secretary 2019-2020 and Vice President 2020-2022.
During this period of time, Liz supported the office operations during the Covid restrictions and the most significant organisational change that CSSANZ has experienced. Liz has been involved in revising the Australian CRC guidelines, been a member of the Operations Committee for the BCCA, and has convened the Colorectal Section of the ASC in Adelaide in 2017, the combined GSA/ CSSANZ Spring meeting in Tasmania in 2019 and the Spring Colorectal Meeting in Adelaide in 2021.
Liz is a South Australian colorectal surgeon, who was Head of the Colorectal Unit at the Lyell McEwin Hospital from 2012-2021, and has recently been appointed as Divisional Director of Surgical Specialties and Anaesthetics for the Northern Adelaide Local Health Network. Liz has an active interest in both teaching and research, being an examiner in General Surgery, and having completed a PhD in colonic motility at Flinders Medical Centre. Liz is currently a member of the Elective and Emergency Surgery taskforces, and the Centre for Excellence and Innovation in Health Cancer Steering committee in South Australia.
Liz’s clinical and research interests include optimising outcomes in surgical management of colorectal cancer, management of complex pelvic floor disorders and improving health equity.
While Liz is passionate about her clinical speciality, she also loves spending time with her family, (especially her two teenage sons), cooking and travelling, and she is a mad soccer fan.
