Welcome to the website of the Colorectal Surgical Society of Australia and New Zealand. Our Society represents specialist colorectal surgeons in Australia and New Zealand. Our members have undertaken advanced training in colorectal surgery, and are dedicated to ongoing professional development to maintain their expertise in the diagnosis and management of intestinal and anorectal problems.

Most of our members are actively involved in research and teaching, and all are committed to maintaining the highest standards of colorectal practice. The Society and its members promote the best evidence-based practice in order to improve the treatment of our patients. We have a close relationship with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, and maintain strong links with many other professional organisations, both nationally and internationally. The Council of the Society hope you find this site useful and informative, and we welcome your feedback.

The Society is not empowered to control the clinical decisions made by any member in the management of patients, and is not responsible in any way for the outcome of treatment given to any patient by one of its members.

What is a colorectal surgeon?

A colorectal surgeon is a surgeon who specialises in the management of disorders of the small bowel, colon, rectum and anus. This includes both benign (non-cancerous) and malignant (cancerous) problems such as:

•    Colorectal cancer and polyps
•    Inflammatory bowel disease including Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis
•    Diverticular disease of the colon
•    Anorectal conditions including haemorrhoids, fissures, abscesses and fistulas
•    Pelvic floor disorders including bowel prolapse
•    Functional bowel problems such as constipation and incontinence

In particular colorectal surgeons have been specifically trained in the diagnosis and treatment of rectal cancer. Rectal cancer treatment requires special investigations prior to surgery and specialised skills  to remove the rectum. Colorectal surgeons have additional experience in this type of surgery.

Colorectal surgeons who are members of the CSSANZ have undertaken further specialist training in colorectal surgery to become experts in their field. This usually consists of a minimum of two years of additional training in accredited clinical positions as well as performing research into aspects of colorectal surgery.
