Introducing New CSSANZ Membership Sub-Categories

Date: January 2026
Category: Membership

CSSANZ has introduced two new Ordinary Membership sub-categories, designed to better reflect the diverse and evolving professional circumstances of its members and to ensure continued connection with the Society.

We’ve been listening to our members. Professional pathways are no longer linear — life, location and opportunity all have an impact. It’s important that our membership structure keeps pace.

These new sub-categories are about flexibility, relevance and — most importantly — keeping colleagues connected to the Society, wherever their career or circumstances may take them.

Michael Johnston, Chair – Membership Committee

New Ordinary Membership sub-categories

Ordinary Member – Overseas

  • For members permanently or temporarily (more than 12 months) residing outside Australia and New Zealand
  • Recognises reduced access to in-person meetings, CPD activities and events
  • Continued access to CSSANZ communications, resources and publications

Ordinary Member – Non-Practising

  • For members who have ceased active colorectal surgical practice but wish to remain connected to the Society
  • Includes those temporarily out of practice for six months or more, such as during academic appointments, teaching roles, career breaks or personal leave
  • Continued access to journal clubs, communications, resources and publications

Members in either new sub-category will pay 10% of the Ordinary Membership annual fee, supporting continued engagement while recognising changing personal and professional circumstances. These updates align CSSANZ with best practice across comparable surgical societies and reflect Council’s commitment to supporting members at all stages of their careers.
